Hilario – Twenty Years An Artist

Hilario – Twenty Years An Artist

It was twenty years ago on New Year’s Day 1994 when Hilario faced the massive stone monoliths of Monument Valley in Arizona and recognized for the first time his true nature. On that day around three o’clock in the afternoon he waited by Thunderbird Mesa. He had been told that the image of the mighty Thunderbird would appear across the mesa. It was a clear cool winter’s day with a sky so blue it seemed like a dream. Then it happened. The breeze stopped, the sun’s shadow shifted and the mythical bird appeared. Hilario felt a touch on his shoulder and was filled with the utter certainty that he was an artist. He turned to his spouse and said “I am going to start painting.” And he did.

Initially, he painted in a figurative style often copying compositions from other artists as he learned to control the paint. But he was not satisfied with the results. As he developed confidence in his techniques, his work became his own; abstract, non-subjective and much more emotional. He had found his style.

But still he was not satisfied although others were and clamored to buy his work. During this time, Hilario regularly walked an urban path in Scottsdale that passed under the streets via tunnels. In one of these tunnels, he became fascinated with the rusted drips left by water seeping down the walls of the tunnel. He liked the emotional ping he felt as he observed the man-made cement returning to its natural elements. He said “… this is what I want to paint”. And he did. He had found his vision.

Underpass

This year we celebrate Hilario’s twenty years as an artist. It has been an incredible journey that is no where near its end. Since Hilario’s artistic epiphany at Monument Valley, he has created more than 1600 original works of art and sold more than 87% of them to patrons from all over the world. Nearly thirty thousand prints of his art hang in public and private venues worldwide. He had his first solo exhibition in 1998 and his thirteenth in 2014. He also published a new book, his second, showcasing his very best work from his first twenty years. Click here to preview or purchase the book.
