When I was about ten years old, my family moved to the edge of the city in the foothills of the Phoenix Mountains. We were surrounded by virgin desert. I explored every rock and slope of my neighborhood, finding wildlife and plant life in abundance. I would play with the desert frogs swimming in puddles left after a summer rain. I would follow the desert tortoise from his burrow to his feeding ground. I would fall asleep at night hearing the coyote howl outside my bedroom window. I’d wake early in the morning and walk the desert behind my house, filling my senses with the sweet spicy smells of greasewood, brittlebush and mesquite.

There is nothing quite like it and it is in my blood.
