SHOW OF RECENT WORK SCOTTSDALE MARCH 2011:

This desert land calms me, cradles me in a place that feels safe: A rocky canyon with deep shadows; the end of a wash that opens up to a secret sandy place; the smell of moist earth and the spicy desert creosote.

Wind rustles across a quiet, empty land speaking to me of struggle and isolation yet calming my mind like the hum of a sacred chant.

I gaze on a vast and clouded land revealed by piercing shafts of sunlight, shimmering mountain islands floating across the distance.

A land familiar to me as I look, but no matter how often I look, brings me a sense of peace.

WEST VALLEY ART MUSEUM SOLO EXHIBITION MAY-AUGUST 2009:  As a self aware artist, I work from my soul, heart and mind …and my mind is the last tool I need to create my art. My soul allows the ethereal chaos of my spirit to emerge; my heart allows my humanity to surface; and my mind channels awareness of my soul’s and heart’s expression into my art.

SOLO SHOW SANTA FE MAY 2009:
Water, a gentle force of change with great power, separates Earth, a great force with no power. Nature is a story of change without success….chaos, separation, erosion, transformation, layers of story underneath what is on top. Change cannot be experienced because it is subtle and takes a long time. Therefore, what one sees is the surface; not the result but the evidence that there was change.

Arizona artist, Hilario Gutierrez, published his first book Chaos On The Canvas – The Art of Hilario in April, 2009. Hilario, who signs all his work with just his first name, has been painting and selling his work since 1994.

Hilario’s book translates why he paints into how he paints. And it answers a question often posed to him by his many fans. Why, when one views a painting by Hilario, does one feel a sudden emotional connection to it and to him? In his book, he explains how he makes this happen. He says; “As a self aware artist, I work from my soul, heart, and mind…and my mind is the last tool I need to create my art. My soul allows the ethereal chaos of my spirit to emerge; my heart allows my humanity to surface; and my mind channels awareness of my soul’s and heart’s expression into my art.”

The book features more than 60 pages of text combined with 35 full color images of Hilario’s work in an oversized lay-flat format. It allows the reader to explore the vision, depth and theory behind some of his most stunning works. On May 22nd, 2009, he opened a solo exhibition of his work at the West Valley Art Museum, an affiliate of the Phoenix Art Museum, in Surprise, Arizona. The Chaos On The Canvas exhibit carried the same title as his book and work featured in the book was displayed. Some of the work was from Hilario’s private collection and had never been exhibited.

An Exploration of the Relationship Among Earthly Elements. Earth, Sky, Mineral & Fire are metaphors for Man’s existence. Earth to Sky is a relationship of immensity: open space, limitless and unbounded; an expansion of heart and mind to be free and continually moving, to explore. Mineral to Fire is a relationship of containment: subterranean, deep, tight and close, releasing heat; a contraction of self but not of passion. These keys, these elements are connected to one’s origin: that physical place that calls to each of us, that earthly region to which each of our hearts are most fully connected.

SOLO SHOW CHICAGO SEPTEMBER 2008: An Interpretation of the Intersection of the Natural World with the Man-Made. Man strives to remake the World as Nature takes it away and replaces it with Beauty.

Edge of Natural interprets the intersection of the natural world with the man-made. That edge on which Man stands between Nature’s control and Man’s dominance; where he struggles to exist outside the influence of Nature.Man thinks he is the creator of something new but it is just Nature hiding it until Man uncovers it. And, as Man strives to remake his world, Nature takes it away and replaces it with beauty.
